New Fuel Laws for Garden Machinery Petrol
How to Use E10 Fuel in your Lawn Mower – What You Need To Know

Share it on:

You may have seen the latest news about a shift in forecourt fuel grade from E5 to E10. Plans are afoot for E10 fuel to become the standard grade at forecourts across the country.

The greener fuel could cut CO2 emissions by 750,000 tons per year. That’s equivalent to taking 350,000 cars off UK roads.

Currently unleaded petrol in the UK contains up to 5% bioethanol (known as E5). E10 will have 10% ethanol.

What is ethanol? And why is it bad news for your lawnmower engine?

Ethanol, an alcohol-based fuel, is produced by the fermentation of various plants, such as sugarcane, grains, and their by-products.

Ethanol fuel, unlike regular unleaded petrol is partially atmospherically carbon neutral. Because the plants that will make biofuel absorb more carbon dioxide as they grow, than will be released into the atmosphere during fuel production and combustion. Ethanol can cause corrosion of fuel components and attract water. Ethanol can block the capillaries of your carburetor, resulting in engine problems. Its corrosive qualities can cause engine damage.

What do we suggest?

Super unleaded fuel can be purchased from forecourts. It contains 5% of ethanol. We recommend Aspen. Aspen is free of ethanol and will keep fresh for up to five years. It emits 99% less harmful emissions, which ultimately extends the life of your machinery.
